Today, organic is the fastest growing segment of U.S. agriculture, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. While there are more USDA-certified organic operations now than ever, the demand for organic products continues to increase. Producers can be extremely successful organic farmers, but they face numerous challenges getting into the market and finding ways to control insects, weeds and diseases each year. Equipment, especially those focused on weed suppression and control, plays a critical role in helping growers achieve their production goals.

Since Congress passed the Organic Food Protection Act in 1990 and standardized USDA-certified organic labeling in 2002, organic agriculture has seen an increase in the numbers of producers and acreage. In 2022, the Organic Trade Assn. reported that sales topped $60 billion for the first time. 2022 food sales, which tallied over $61 billion were up more than 4% from sales in 2021, which totaled over $59 billion.

Surveys conducted by the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service in 2011 and 2021 show that producers continue to add organic crop acreage. In 2021, there were nearly 4.9 million acres in the U.S. devoted to organic agriculture production. Certified organic cropland acreage rose 79% during this time to 3.6 million acres.  During the same time, certified organic operations increased more than 90%. The U.S. is now home to more than 17,000 certified organic operations.

To provide insight into this continuously growing segment of the ag market, Ag Equipment Intelligence researched industry trends and interviewed manufacturers, growers, industry experts to uncover the market potential for equipment among organic producers.

The insights from this report are intended to help your business understand how to further penetrate the organic farming equipment market and what this niche needs most from their equipment manufacturers and partners.
