Record wildfires have swept through the Texas panhandle beginning in late February, made up of several independent blazes that have impacted a large portion of the area. A March 14 report from Texas Standard said the Smokehouse Creek Fire is now “nearly completely contained after spreading across roughly 1.1 million acres.” The Smokehouse Creek Fire was the largest wildfire in Texas history.
