Two of India’s tractor makers reported December 2018 sales results and neither was heading in the same direction.

According to published reports, Escorts Agri Machinery said it sold 4,598 tractors in December, up 27.5% from 3,606 units a year earlier. Domestic sales came in at 4,212 units, up 21.2% from 3,476 units in December 2017. Exports rose to 386 units during the month vs. 130 units last December.

At the same time, Mahindra’s Farm Equipment Sector, the country’s largest manufacturer of tractors, reported its sales declined for the month of December. The company said it sold 17,404 units compared to 18,488 in December 2017. Domestic sales were 16,510 tractors vs. 16,855 units a year earlier. Exports came in at just under 900 tractors.
