Cool, wet weather continues to hamper farmers trying to get this year’s corn and soybeans planted.

According to USDA, 23% of corn acres had been planted as of May 5. This is 8% better than a week earlier. While that may be considered progress, it remains well behind the 36% planted a year ago on this date and even farther behind the 5 year average of 46% of acres planted in early May.

Soybean planting, meanwhile, isn’t going anywhere very quickly. USDA reports that 6% of soybean acreage is in the ground so far. This is only 3% better than a week earlier. It remains behind both a year ago on this date and the 5 year average of 14%.

Despite a beautiful weekend in Wisconsin — 70 degrees and sunny — it began raining again late Sunday evening, which carried over into Monday. Rain is forecast to return on Wednesday.
